Hospital Leaves Needle In Baby’s Heart

What To Do If You Suspect Your Child Suffered A Birth Injury

While all medical procedures have risks, there are some risks patients should not have to experience. Patients shouldn’t have to fear that doctors or other healthcare professionals will be grossly negligent, but unfortunately, there are some instances when medical negligence causes serious injuries and even wrongful death. At a Florida hospital, a surgeon operating on a baby left a needle inside the child’s heart. When the baby’s parents insisted something was wrong, the hospital didn’t believe them.

The Florida couple was shocked to learn their baby had a needle in her heart. Their child had undergone surgery at a Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and during a follow up appointment a doctor determined a needle had been left in the child’s aorta. The couple rushed the child back to the children’s hospital where the procedure took place, but the surgeons there insisted there was no needle left inside their baby.

Not willing to give up on their child, the couple went to another hospital ten days later where doctors determined a needle had been left in the child’s heart. As absolutely shocking as this experience was, it wasn’t even the first time for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Since 2016, there have been two instances of needles being left inside of pediatric patients after surgical procedures were completed. The hospital did admit the mortality rate among heart surgery patients has increased and stated at least one top surgeon has stopped operating and the hospital has reduced the overall number of operations performed. Some more complicated procedures have been stopped completely.
