Cell Phones and Nursing Home Abuse

A disturbing trend has emerged in nursing home facilities that have authorities, patient advocates, and residents’ families deeply concerned. Some nursing home staff are using cell phones to take humiliating pictures and videos of the residents and posting them to social media.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services oversee the regulation of nursing home facilities, and they issued a stern warning to nursing home employees: stop exploiting the elderly with embarrassing pictures on social media. The agency advises nursing homes to implement strict cell phone policies to prevent employees from engaging in such behavior. Since 2012, 35 cases of nursing home staff posting embarrassing pictures of resident have been reported to the agency, but it is likely many more cases go unreported.

The Dangers of Elder Abuse

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, elders who have been abused have a 300% higher risk of death than elders who are not mistreated. Authorities are doing everything in their power to catch abusers, but they are running into a unique problem.

Cell Phone Nursing Home Abuse

A popular social media app called SnapChat erases all pictures and videos 24 hours after they are posted. For abusers using this channel, they must be caught in the act or the digital evidence of the abuse is permanently deleted. Dozens of nursing home employees have been arrested across the country for posting images or videos on SnapChat, but many more are still abusing residents.

How To Prevent Abuse

If you trust your loved one to the care of a nursing home facility, there are several important questions to ask to help prevent this type of abuse. Ask the facility what their cell phone policy is and what punishments are issued for violations. Also ask the facility if they have had a problem with staff cell phone use in the past.

What To Do If You Suspect Abuse

If you suspect your loved one is experiencing cell phone nursing home abuse or any other type of mistreatment, immediately contact authorities to put a stop to the abuse. If you witness any abuse, whether online or in person, report the abuse right away. Abuse can be reported to the local authorities or to the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.
